DESCRIPTION
Masonry was selected for its durability, permanence, and how it reads uniquely at multiple scales. From distance, it reads as a strong, monolithic mass. Closer up, the mass is broken up by varying the texture but not the material, bringing legibility to the floors of the building. Close up, its module and textured face give it an intimate scale while maintaining its massive quality.

STRUCTURAL MASONRY DESIGN AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
EDGEWOOD ESTATES
Location: Winnipeg, MB
Engineer: Crosier Kilgour & Partners Ltd
General: Akman Construction Ltd
DESCRIPTION
We decided on the masonry route due to the size and nature of the project. The building is a high-rise and a residence so of course, the most important aspect of masonry is
the safety factor. With 225 units and 180 feet, we did not want to take chances with the residents’ safety. In addition, masonry provided privacy by greatly reducing noise transfer and overall adds 25 years to the lifecycle of the building.

DESCRIPTION
The limestone was selected for a number of environmental reasons: 1) low-embodied energy; 2) durability and permanence; 3) locally-mined material. It was also chosen for its old-world style aesthetic. The owners liked the look of the old stone foundations, therefore a supply of naturally-aged stone was sourced and each stone was hand-chipped in order to achieve this look.

DESCRIPTION
Masonry was selected in an effort to knit together existing construction with the new. The existing 1965 historic building featured exterior Tyndall stone cladding that was unique, in excellent condition, and showed little signs of weathering. Expanding the building and cladding it in the same Tyndall stone ensures that the building will continue to be useful and enjoyable too.
